Energy – Sunlight

All living things need energy to survive.  This resource allows organisms to do things. Things like grow, reproduce, move, maintain balance and defend. Sunlight is the main source of this on Earth.  It supplies all plants with the energy needed to survive. Plants are the producers in an environment. They make their own food through photosynthesis.

Sunlight

With so many living things around us using energy every day, you might ask where it all comes from. The main source on the Earth today comes from the Sun. Your ability to run, jump and play sports, is because of the Sun.

The sun is the source of all energy. It produces heat and light. The sun affects the plants and animals living in an area.

Life is dependent on the sun. All cells (the smallest units of life) cannot survive on their own. They need power to live. The sun provides all plant cells with this power.

Needs Of Living Things

Most needs of living things include food, water, shelter, air, and energy to survive. Plants need water, nutrients, air, and light. Animals need food, water, air, and shelter to survive. Both plants and animals need energy to live.

Food, water, shelter, air, and energy are the resources necessary to obtain life.

Energy Flow

Do you need sunlight to survive? As humans, we do not directly need sunlight to survive. But, without sunlight, there would be no life.

Plants use sunlight to create their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Many animals then eat the plants, taking this energy into their own bodies. Other animals then eat these plant eaters, passing the resource from one organism to another.

Solar Energy

Not only is sunlight used during photosynthesis, it’s also used by us as a resource. Humans use technology to turn sunlight into usable sources. We can use sunlight for heating, cooling, and electricity in homes and buildings. Sunlight can be used in many ways and by many things.

Solar energy gets absorbed into solar panels and is transferred into power.
