Yaks live in the Himalayan Mountains. They are able to survive very high altitudes, even above 20,000 ft. (6,000m), which is higher than any other large mammal can go. Yaks are well suited to life in these rugged mountains. They have long shaggy coats and short, strong legs. Their coats keep them warm in cold temperatures. They are also great climbers. Yaks have been used as pack animals for thousands of years. There are more domestic yaks these days than there are wild yaks. Wild yaks are larger than domestic yaks.
