Vicunas are a species of camel well adapted to living at very high altitudes in the Andes Mountains of South America. They are not as heavily built as other camel species, but they are just as strong. They can survive high on barren mountainsides up to altitudes of 16,500 ft. (5,000m). Even at this altitude where the air is much thinner, Vicunas are able to run at speeds of up to 30 mph (50km/h). Vicunas live in small herds and feed on different kinds of vegetation. Due to years of hunting, vicunas are not as common in the wild as they once were.
