About Portuguese Man-of-War
The Portuguese Man-of-War drifts great distances in the wind, like a miniature sailboat, with its gas filled float.
Even though it looks like a jellyfish, it is actually a siphonophore, or a floating collection of cnidarians living together. One animal forms the float, while others sting, digest food, or reproduce.
Its tentacles trail beneath the float as it drifts along and can be up to 66 ft.(20m) in length. Their powerful stings can kill anyone who has the misfortune to get tangled up in them.
