Large Skipper

About Large Skipper

The Large Skipper is found throughout the palearctic region which includes Europe and Asia. It is found throughout Europe and extends into Japan. Its habitat is lowlands. Its time of flight is daytime. As a caterpillar, it is bluish green with yellow stripes on the sides. As a butterfly, the Large Skipper is a brilliant dark red-orange color with a lighter orange pattern on the wings. The male of the species has one dark spot on each forewing that identifies it as male. The forewings of both the males and females are longer and more pointed than the hindwings which are more round in shape. The Large Skipper feeds on various grasses.
