A chamois can run up almost sheer rock on its nonslip hooves, jumping from ledge to ledge. It can also run downhill with equal agility, dropping up to 20 ft. (6m) in a single leap. Even very young chamois can make death-defying leaps. Chamois are elegant animals with short horns that bend back to form hooks. In the summer, they live above the treeline on rocky slopes. In the winter, they live at lower elevations and feed in the forests.
