About Alpine Ibex
This wild goat lives high in the European Alps. It mainly eats grass. Both male and female have large, backswept horns. The horns on the males can reach up to 4.5 ft. (1.4m) in length. For a long time, Alpine Ibex were hunted. Over a century ago, they were reduced to one herd of about 60 animals. Since then they have been given protection and their numbers have recovered to about 10,000. The Alpine Ibex also faces the danger of avalanches during the spring months when the snow melts.
